Class Description

We will be learning about several composers through stories, music, and activities. There will be a $15 class fee and the class size is limited to 10 students.

Crafts with a Purpose Jr. (4th and 5th)

How would you like your child to learn how to make their own gifts for family and friends?  One mom told me that at Christmas time she was so blessed that instead of her son being excited about what he was getting for Chritmas, he couldn't wait to give the gifts he had made to his relatives.  Other moms have told me that they wished that some of the gifts their children have given away, they wished they had given to them instead.

In this class, I will be teaching the students how to not only make crafts that they can give as gifts but also how to tap into the creativity that the Lord has put in all of us.  Some of the crafts will be calendar centered while others won't be.  Even though I have designed/planned each of the projects I will be encouraging their own creativitiy in the finished project.  Some of the projects will only take a week while others will take longer.  This is meant to be a fun class.  The intention is for it to be a class not just to give them busy work or for Mom to help it "accidentally end up in the trash".  Therefore, we will be using real scrapbook quality supplies in some of our projects even though we will not be making scrapbooks, possibly a scrapbook page but not a whole album.  By this I am saying that we will be using quality products for our projects no pre-made glue together products.

There are certain supplies that each student will be required to keep in class each week as part of their basic kit.  These items will be listed on the forum seperately.  Except for the few items that are in their basic kit, I will be picking up the rest of the items that they will need for their projects.

My intention is not to make really expensive crafts, just quality crafts.  Therefore, there wil be an initial deposit fee of $25 with additional $20 or $25 sometime during the year if and when necessary.  I only ask for $10 at a time when necessary.  If you have questions about the fees, please feel free to contact me.

This class is not a drop in if you feel like it class.  I will be committing my time and energy to not only teach the class but to prepare for the class as well.  Therefore, I ask that you and your child be committed as well.  If any students are rude in any way they will be asked to leave my class.  I expect them to not only be respectful to me but also all of the other students.  Please always fee free to ask me any questions about the class that you may have.

This class is for grades 4th and 5th.  I am willing to have between 10-12 students in the class.  Please have your student on time as we will need the whole time to work on projects.  I love teaching this class and look forward to teaching it again.

Class is full year on Thursday 10:00 - 10:55.

Character-Based Writing Lessons grades 7-9

Character-Based Writing

With a focus on character, this class will be reviewing and continuing what was taught in the Student Writing Intensive B course.  My goal is to cover all the same topics that the "Continuation Course B" covers, but with a focused theme.  We will be learning about Christian character and virtues while studying and writing about St. Francis, Abraham Lincoln and Mother Theresa.

Students who have taken the Excellence In Writing- Student Writing Intensive B course are invited to join this class.  We will move somewhat quickly through the review techniques and will slow down when we reach new material.  The new material is between SWI B and SWI C.  So, while this class reinforces SWI B, it also prepares students for SWI C the following year should they choose to continue.

We will move at a pace where I feel that struggling students are exhibiting success.  This class may not be best suited for students who are already successfully writing at grade level.  If you are uncertain about the appropriateness of this class for your child, please contact me.

Assignments this year WILL be graded based on the grading guidelines provided by the curriculum.

Some of the new techniques covered will include:

-writing from pictures

-additional setence openers

-creative writing

-critiques and reviews.

Materials Needed

-binder from SWI B (with previous writing assignements removed to start fresh)

-Character-Based Writing Lessons book from Institute for Excellence In Writing  ($29)

-highlighter

-loose leaf paper in binder

useful but not required

Crafts with a Purpose (6th - 8th)

This class is for grades 6th - 8th.  I am willing to have between 10-12 students in the class.  Please have your student on time as we will need the whole time to work on projects.  I love teaching this class and look forward to teaching it again.

Class is full year on Thursday 8:30 - 10:00.

Teacher: Sharon Doughty  crafts@wholesomefamily.com

Crafts with a Purpose Beyond

Crafts with a Purpose Beyond is for any student that has taken Crafts with a Purpose with me in the pas, even if it was not at First Agape.  The grade level is 7th-9th grade, however, if your child does not fit in that age group and they have taken it with me in the past, please contact me directly.  We will be making new projects except for a few that students have already requested we make again.  Students will need their own craft kits which I will send out an email reminder about what should be in it.  The fee is $25.  Please let me know if you are not able to pay the fee before the class starts.  I know that there are some students that just can't wait for this class to start.  I have to say, I too am so looking forward to this class.

The class is from 11:00 to 11:55 on Thursdays.

The screaming of woman in the camps. The dead bodies on the road from traveling from one place to another. Hitler, his tactics and his failure. The chard remains of bodies left to burn. As we explore this peice together I hope you will be enlightened and be able to relate to others its affects. Discussions will be held on certain subjects. Basic Apparel Sewing

Fall Semester Only – Tuesdays at 9am

Age/Grade – For girls only, high school to adult

Class Size –  All students enrolled in Fashion Design for Personal Style must take this class. Remaining spots (4-6 expected) will be given on a first come basis.

Course Description:

While some might not realize it, apparel sewing is different from quilting or home dec sewing. It requires a separate skill set to translate 2D images into curved 3D female shapes. We’ll talk about the differences and learn about pattern selection, fabrics, fitting, seam finishes and how to put together professional looking garments at home.

Anyone who completes this class will be allowed to participate in the Fashion Show in May. Garments for the fashion show are subject to First Agape dress code and approval of the instructor.

Prerequisites:

You must have a sewing machine, know how to thread it and have a basic understanding of how to use it. We will NOT be able to take time in class to help you fix or use your machine. If you have trouble with your machine for whatever reason, you will be expected to have it fixed outside of class for the next class and complete any in-class project at home.

Previous sewing experience of any kind is a plus, but not necessary.

Textbooks & Tools:

* Sewing machine in good working order with the manual

* Basic sewing tools – pins, needles, tape measure, scissors, seam ripper, etc.

* The Sewing Book by Alison Smith ($40 from amazon.com) or an instructor approved substitute

Optional Resource:

Threads Fitting DVDs

Course Fees:

There is no specific course fee, but you will be expected to purchase supplies as needed. Expected material costs, not including basic tools and sewing machine: approximately $50-$100.

I would love to partner with a parent as a fundraiser for supplies for those who would like to take the class but aren’t able to financially. Please call me for information and details.

Biology - Exploring Creation with Biology - Apologia series

In Biology we will go through the book, Exploring Creation with Biology, by Jay Wile, part of the Apologia Series, as well as doing all of the labs possible.  Because of all we are attempting to do, we need 3 hours per week, full year.   At this time, class time will be Tuesday 9-11AM and Thursday 9-10AM.      The last 3 Biology classes taught here at the AGAPE have all met 3 hours per week, and only one teacher was able to complete the book.   They all say that the 3 hours per week are necessary.

The grade level is 9th and 10th grade.  However, if your student has completed General Science and Physical Science, they may attend this class, even if they are in 8th grade.  11th and 12th graders are welcome; however, be prepared to be in class with younger students.

Teachers are Karin Marineau and Elaine Driscoll.   Reach Karin at karin.marineau@verani.com  or at home 627-1473.   Always leave a message if you get an answering machine.

All Students need a book; we are using 2nd edition Apologia,Exploring Creation with Biology by Jay Wile, a test and correction booklet (They come together if you order through CBD.), a dissection kit and the dissection animals.    We are so blessed that the teachers from last year and the year before are lending us their slides and microscopes.   Praise God!  If you have a dissection kit, but only need the animals, they can be ordered separately.  Thus far, I have found them together for $31.  Karin would like to order these and collect the money this May.   If you have found them for less, please let Karin know as soon as possible.  Students will also need a lab book, which is a notebook or binder with which they will write out the lab, and then include observations.      This is to be done before the lab.   We would like students to start writing up labs this summer, leaving room for observations and drawings.

In addition to the money for dissection kit/ and or specimens, there will be a $30 fee for the class.   This will go toward extra supplies and copies.   Alison, who taught biology this year, told us that she spent over $40 per student.   If we find that supplies/copies are more than expected, we may ask parents for the additional cost in the 2nd half of the year.

FYI - 2 years ago, 43 students took biology, this same class, this same book.   Ask around for used books, test/correction booklets and dissection kits.  We can order the animals to be dissected for about half the cost, plus shipping.

16 students max is ideal for this class.   However, we may take a few more.

THIS IS A PARENTS HANDS ON CLASS, meaning parents will study with their student, administer and correct the module tests, which will then be handed in at the beginning of the next class. There will be reading and studying homework and quizzes as well as the tests.

Excellence in Writing Level C1

Excellence in Writing C1 helps students with the SAT'S, compositions, short stories, essays, notetaking and more.  This program has been proven to work if you put the time and effort in it.  Almost immediately, your student will confidently be making good grammar choices and improving in their writing.

Each week there will be homework.  I will post all homework on the First Agape web site so please check it weekly.

There will be a mid-term exam and a final exam on the writing concepts learned.  If completed, you will recieve a full credit in language arts.

Class and Time: Class limit will be 12.   It will run on Thursdays from 11:00-11:55 in room 221 (room subject to change)

Please know your basic grammar (verb, pronoun, adj,, subject, predicate, sentence structure...)  We will take the first few classes going over basic grammar as a review, but then we will get right into the writing structure.

You will need a computer or typewriter so you can print out all your compositions before handing in.  This will happen weekly.

Our class will be participating in "Historical Character Night" as it will teach public speaking to the notetaking section we will be learning about.  This will fullfil that requirement.

Parents will be asked to fill-in for me if I am absent unless you are teaching during that time in another class.  This will keep us on target and finish on time (by May).

Text:  you will need to buy Student Writing Intensive Level C.  This is the first year you will be able to buy ebook through their website which will cost a lot less.  If you have more than one child in class, you are able to make copies.  We cannot as a co-op make copies for you because of the copywrite law, so make sure you have the notebook for the first day of class.

Class Fee:  $10 for materials payable to Linda Abel by May, 2011 (before the end of this school year).  This will also hold your spot for confirmation.

Excellence in Writing Level C2

Excellence in Writing Continuation Course Level C

If your student loved the Student Writing Intensive, they will enjoy this continuation course! Picking up where we left off, these DVDs provide 32 more lessons to take your student through the rest of the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style writing units. Students continue to use the same notebook and charts, learning new models and techniques not previously presented in the SWI. Contained on the CD-ROM are the source material for each lesson, checklists, lesson plans, grading sheets, and student samples. Because the lesson plans are chock full of material, we can use this product for 1-2 years of writing instruction. We will do this in a two year plan so we have time to get through it all without rushing through. So, we will be going through lessons 1-16 this year, and lessons 17-32 next year.  We will also participate in the Historical Character Night which would fullfill a requirement for one of the lessons.  (Date to be determined soon.)

All the student handouts, reinforcement lessons, and teacher’s notes are provided on a CD-ROM included with the DVDs , that is why there is a fee, there is no book for you to purchase.

Class time:  Tuesdays at 11:00-11:55 in room 221 (room subject to change)

Prerequisites: This course assumes that the student has completed the Student Writing Intensive Level C either live or on video or has had equivalent instruction like in First Agape for returning students.

Class Fee:  Since the product costs is so great for the student and teacher CD-ROM which would include the printinng of materials from the CD-ROM, I will need to charge a fee of $25/pp.  This will need to be paid before the end of the First Agape school year - May.

Fashion Design for Personal Style

All Year – Tuesdays at 8am

Age/Grade – For girls only, high school to adult

Class Size – 6

Course Description:

Finding garments that fit, flatter and are stylishly modest is a tall order in today’s fashion food chain. Aside from paying high prices at specialty modest boutiques, learning to create your own garments from scratch can be a great alternative. If you’ve always wanted to create your own garments or are considering a career in the fashion industry, this will be an excellent introduction and provide lots of hands on experience.

We will briefly study fashion history and learn the basic principles of fashion design, including creating silhouettes, proportions, the ins and outs of fabric, fit and an understanding of what looks good on you and those around you. In the second semester we will learn flat pattern drafting and create garments from scratch. While the course material we will cover is fashion design, it will be specifically taught and targeted to show how it applies to you and your body.

Anyone who completes this class will be allowed to participate in the Fashion Show in May. Garments for the fashion show are subject to First Agape dress code and approval of the instructor.

Please note: One of the textbooks I will be using to teach fashion principles contains several classical female nude paintings for illustration purposes. I’ve looked for suitable teaching alternatives that do not contain nudes and have not found any. As with anything fashion related, especially when examining fashion history or web searching for homework, there will be varying degrees of female nudity. Otherwise, in the classroom, I will avoid it as much as possible. If there are any questions, please contact me.

All enrolled students must take Basic Apparel Sewing during the first semester on Tuesdays at 9am and Fashion Lab during the same time slot second semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of the financial and time considerations involved in this class, I will be meeting with and interviewing the pairs candidates and their parents in August to discuss and assess commitment, and then prayerfully pick the students. First sign ups do not guarantee placement in the class.

Textbooks & Tools:

* Because several of the textbooks we will be using are expensive ($40-$60+ each), I will be ordering them book club style through my local library. All books will be required by due date or they will be subject to a $2 per day fine. The complete book list will be available in May.

* Sewing machine in good working order with the manual

* Basic sewing tools – pins, needles, tape measure, scissors, seam ripper, etc.

* Fashion design tool for 2nd semester – French curve, rulered straight edge, plastic wrap, rainbow pack of thin Sharpie markers, etc.

* Make Your Own Dress Patterns by Adele Margolis - $12

Fashion Design Course: Principles, Practice, and Techniques: A Practical Guide for Aspiring Fashion Designers by Steven Faerm

Course Fees:

There is no specific course fee, but you will be expected to purchase supplies as needed. Expected material costs, not including basic tools and sewing machine: $100-$200 dollars.

I would love to partner with a parent as a fundraiser for supplies for those who would like to take the class, but aren’t able to financially. Please call me for information and details.

Lies Young Women Believe; and the Truth That Sets Them Free (Nancy Leigh DeMoss & Dannah Gresh), with accompanying study guide.

Class Description

Girls Gone Wise There are many influences in our culture that beckon our youth away from the wise Christian path, and into a world gone wild. In this class we want to shine the light on God’s beautiful truths, and help girls to see that God’s ways are much better. Our main text, Lies Young Women Believe; and the Truth That Sets Them Free, by Nancy Leigh DeMoss & Dannah Gresh, looks at 25 lies commonly believed by teenage girls. These are lies perpetuated in our culture about God, Satan, Self, Guys, Relationships, Faith, Sin, the Media, and the Future. The lies are then contrasted with God’s Truth, which is liberating, empowering, refreshing, and most of all, attainable. This class requires each student to read one chapter out of Lies Young Women Believe each week in preparation for class discussions. Over the course of the semester students are required to read 3 other books: Passion & Purity (Elisabeth Elliot), I Kissed Dating Good-Bye (Joshua Harris), and When God Writes Your Love Story (Eric & Leslie Ludy). We chose these books because they speak to many questions facing teens and are biblically sound. We also require that each girl read one other book of their choosing from the booklist, and present a brief review of that book to the rest of the class. Mothers are encouraged to read from the booklist along with their daughters. All of the books are excellent, and open the door for meaningful conversation. Finally, each student is required to complete a final project. This project must show something of what the student has learned in class, involve additional research on a topic of personal interest, and be creative in nature. We encourage the girls in the class to memorize one scripture each week that conquers the lies with Truth. The goal of this class is to show each young woman how deeply God loves them. We want each of them to come away convinced from Scripture that every word of God is pure, and that His will is not to deprive us of fun, but to preserve us from failure and destruction, and give us a life of victory, strength, and joy.

Human Video 10th-12th grade

Tuesday and Thursdays 8 - 9:55 am

Human video is drama set to music to share with others in order to expose cultural lies and challange listeners to stand for Truth.  This is a a great opportunity for ministry and spritiual growth. This class requires a commitment to class Tuesday 8-10 and Thursday 8-10   There will be a number of ministry opportunities throughout the year, which the students need to be able to attend as well as the Fine Arts Competition.  If a commitment can not be made, perhaps human video should not be considered.

Intro to Logic

Let's argue! Just kidding (sort of).  Americans are bombarded with logical fallacies (bad reasoning) on a daily basis. Novels, textbooks, movies, TV, radio, internet, advertising, politicians, even colleagues and friends use faulty arguments to try to influence us. This class will help students learn to evaluate statements for relevance, presumptions and clarity so that they can stand firm and communicate their beliefs while recognizing faulty and misleading arguments. Red herrings, ad hominem, tu quoque, genetic fallacies, appeals to emotion, fear, authority and ignorance, mob and snob appeal, begging the question, slippery slope and weak analogies are just some of the informal fallacies students will learn to recognize and respond to.

In preparation for class discussions each week, students will read several short lessons in the text and think through the accompanying exercises. We'll discuss the material in class, and students will encounter it again on a quiz (take-home or at the beginning of the next class). Throughout the semester, each student will create a review list of the informal fallacies covered and collect examples of each. Students will compile these examples and the review sheet into an Informal Fallacy File, which will be graded as a final project.

Don't let the faulty reasoning of others steer you from truth. Develop the critical thinking and logical reasoning skills you need to stand firm and communicate your beliefs.

Required text: The Fallacy Detective, 3rd Edition, by Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn. Available from many vendors online, including www.timberdoodle.com (Product Code 770-770, $17.75).

Marine Biology 10th-12th

Course Description:

This course concentrates on marine wildlife and marine habitats. It provides a survey of members of each biological kingdom that live in marine environments. The student will learn about the microscopic organisms that make life in the ocean possible, including details about their interesting habits and life cycles. The student will also learn about the anatomy of many macroscopic marine creatures such as clams, starfish, and sharks. The student will then learn how these creatures and their physical surroundings form marine ecosystems such as intertidal zones, estuaries, coral reefs, continental shelf communities, epipelagic communities, and deep-ocean communities. The course ends with a study of marine resources and our relationship with the sea.

We'll begin with a 1 week marine science camp at the Acadia Institute of Oceanography.  It is optional but well worth it.  It will be a condensed version of the advanced session.  See link below. For those interested, we'll fund raise over the summer to offset the cost.

Supplemental Material: None

 Major Course Objectives:

  1. Obtain a familiarity with the philosophical works that are the foundations of Western thought
  2. Gain an understanding of the fundamental issues that are involved in any philosophical system or outlook
  3. Clarify one’s personal value system by exploring alternatives presented

by philosophers representing a variety of viewpoints

Instructor’s (additional Course Goals): WELCOME! The study of Philosophy is both complicated, yet fascinating. My hope is that this class will challenge your way of thinking, enlighten your understanding, and better your insight about what people believe and why. My goal is that this will be one of the most enjoyable and interesting classes you will take as a student at Agape Homeschool

Course Methodology: This course will use a lecture/discussion format and use multi-media where possible. There may be some in class writing and/or short quizzes- these will count just like a homework assignment.

A Note on Participation: This class requires and expects the student to participate. Philosophy is meant to be discussed. Participation is an integral part of the grade.

Methods of Testing/Evaluation: We will have a weekly reading and written homework assignment, which may include essays, multiple choice, true/false, matching, etc. From these will arise the midterm and final test. Tests are not cumulative. The goal is to finish a chapter or two from the text every week.

Attendance Policy: My policy is that no distinction will be made between excused or unexcused absences, (but for extraordinary circumstances at the discretion of the instructor). Participation is part of the grade, and missed scheduled classes will affect that grade. Participation grade cannot be made up. Late arrivals or leaving early may be considered an absence. Any student missing more than two classes in a class that meets once a week may result in a failing grade or withdrawal from the program. An attendance sheet may be passed around for each class. Life happens, so I do allow ONE absence before that absence affects the participation grade.

Policy on Tardiness: Class starts on time. Tardiness is disruptive to the class and detrimental to learning. Those that are late can expect a drop in their participation grade, and may be asked to wait outside the class before entering at a break in the lecture. The same policy applies for leaving early.

Homework/Outside Assignments Policy: You can expect a homework assignment every class, and it is due at the beginning of the next scheduled class. No late assignments will be accepted. I do drop the lowest homework grade.

Classroom Conduct Policy: During discussions, core philosophical values will be intricately discussed. While spirited discussion in the Socratic style is encouraged, RESPECT will be shown at all times. YOU WILL NEVER BE GRADED ON YOUR VIEWPOINT, but you will be evaluated on your ability to assimilate and discuss the information presented. We follow the exhortation of Socrates that “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

Cell Phone Use: Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and put away during class time!

Policy on Make-Up Work/Tests: Tests and homework assignments may contain essays; fill in the blanks, true/false and/or matching. Tests and/or homework assignments MAY NOT BE MADE UP! Mid Term and Final may not be made up, except under extraordinary circumstances, and solely at the discretion of the instructor. Assignments are due at the BEGINNING of class. All work must be submitted in HARD COPY or as an email attachment. It is the student’s responsibility to download, print, name and staple all assignments. Any emailed work can be accepted, but its successful transmission is solely the responsibility of the student. All work (except possible in class work) must be typed, double-spaced, numbered, 12 font, stapled and proofread. Grammar counts on all work!

Academic Honesty: Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is defined as using or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as one’s own in any academic exercise. Cheating is defined as using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise or activity. Plagiarized work may result in a failing grade for the assignment or for the course.

Method of Researching the Instructor: You may reach me by phone or email- I prefer email. If you are going to be absent or late, please let me know if you can ahead of time. A phone call and leaving a message is fine. Email me your work BEFORE the class so that it will count!

NOTE: Students must have an active email account. It will be used as a class list for various announcements. All cancellations and work because of this, whether because of instructor or weather, will be announced on Agape’s Website. Students must log on to Agape’s Website and do assignment listed for the next class.

The Science of Creation

Operational science provides a logical, rational basis for belief in the Genesis account of creation. Be prepared to give a verbal and written defense for what you believe! This class involves viewing, analyzing, discussing and writing about DVDs that present different topics of and evidence for a biblical interpretation of the evidence. Short reading assignments and frequent take-home multiple choice and short-answer quizzes help students prepare for and review each week's DVD and discussion.

As additional preparation for the challenges students will encounter in academic and other settings, students may write three or four short essays analyzing and synthesizing the readings, DVDs and class discussions. Topics and due dates for the essays will be posted, and essays may be completed by students at their parents' discretion. I will read and grade essays that are turned in by the due dates.

Students are not required to purchase a text.  I will provide a collection of articles which will be assigned for reading each week, as well as my notes taken while previewing the DVDs. I will email each week's quiz to parents, to be completed by the student at home. Quizzes can be returned to me by email or printed and handed in at the next week's class for grading. This is a great collection of creation DVDs!

Truth 2U

Truth 2U

This course is based on the DVD sets 'The Truth Project and True U'  from Focus on the Family (www.focusonthefamily.org)

How do you know God is real? Is there evidence for a Creator? This life-changing DVD provides proven facts and insights from philosophy, cosmology and biology to help you engage intellectually with professors and peers, both in and outside the classroom. We will also do, "The Toughest Test in College" DVD. This is a full year  class which will include going through the Truth Project and knowing where you stand with Christ.  Then, we will dive deeper into the series from Focus on the Family called True U (trueu.org).  This will help those who are planning on going to college and where the world and your beleifs meet.  How will you deal with your faith in secular college... or even so, Christian colleges?  What do professors believe compared to yours?  How will you deal with differences?

We will be watching the videos in class and for homework, write a page report/summary from your notes that was taken from watching the videos.  This will deepen your learning and perspective from watching the videos and strenghthen your belief.

The course will be $5 per person with a limit of 12.  The fee needs to be paid by the end of the First Agape school year (May).  A notebook is needed to taking notes.  Also, if I am unable to be in class, I may ask one of the parents to take over the class.

Course Description:

We will be using The Teaching Company’s video course World History: The Fertile Crescent to The American Revolution with lectures by Linwood Thompson. Mr. Thompson brings history alive and is very informative about each topic. The course uses videotaped lectures by Mr. Thompson (who dresses in character for each topic covered) with follow up comprehension and essay questions. The comprehension questions can be answered in brief sentences, but the essay questions will require a more in depth answer. I will not be collecting the essays, but the students will be expected to have them completed in order to participate in class discussion. Class participation is a must in this class. We will have 6 tests during the year (after every 5 lessons).
