Prerequisite: childcare for teacher is required
Teacher: Tikatia Morris jecsmommy@gmail.com

Poetivities combines poetry and involvement activities in ways that emphasize poetry writing as a skill which can be taught.  Each class will include multi-step lessons designed to guide very young children into creative expression.  The poetivity lessons are also carefully desinged to provide integration primarily in language arts, but also in cross-curriculum disciplines as well.  The lessons and the high degree of involvement that they generate will certainly stimulate vocabulary enrichment and will  serve to strengthen reading skills.

Materials:  Students will need a notebook dedicated entirely to this class, as well as to come prepared with sharpened pencils, scissors, glue sticks and a package of crayons or colored pencils.  Some weeks the students may also be asked to bring something from home.  For our first week students will need to bring  his or her favorite toy to class.
Students should expect to accomplish most of their work in class, though some homework may be assigned.  As this is poetry and we are encouraging creativity and free thinking, the students will not be graded on these assignments so long as they followed the instructions.
Course Fee: $5 per student

Crafts Grade 6-8

Let's explore, experiment and create...let's make some crafts! We'll try a variety of techniques, tools, materials and media, and acheive some fascinating and intriguing effects. We'll try using some old things in new ways, and new things in, well, new ways, too. We'll learn some things you'd learn in an art class, and make some things you might want to hide away for gift-giving. Some projects will take more than one week, some will be done and ready to go home the day we start them. I'll provide most  of the materials and supplies - if there's something you need to bring in for particular projects (scissors, glue, etc.), I'll let you know ahead of time. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Current Events

CURRENT EVENTS

Grade levels- 7-10th

Classroom- 219

Time- Tuesday and Thursday 1:25-2:25

Course Description

We will be discussing any major current events or issues which are in the news today. For this reason I am limiting the class to Junior High age or older.

The goal of this class is not to teach the children what to think, but rather how to think.  We will be researching topics from a wide range of sources and forming arguments based on things other than just scripture. While I believe that Scripture is the inerrant word of God, we as Christians need to be able to defend our ideas when talking to people who do not believe.

The students will be expected to watch/read/listen to stories about national and international issues between classes.  I want all students to read the book Animal Farm by George Orwell over the summer.

Each week we will be discussing a different event or issue.  The students will be expected to research the topic using questions provided on the forum as a guide.  All students need to have access to the forum and participate in discussions about the weekly issue.

I will be ordering “God’s World Top Story” for each of the students and have them delivered to my house.  The magazines will be changing to a once a month format so students need to bring that month’s issue each week.

I will need parents to be available to supervise my younger children (ages 8 and 9) while I am teaching class.

If parents have any questions, they can contact me by email or at 529-5649.

Poetry

You're a poet - even if you don't yet know it!  You might not even know you like poetry yet, but just wait....We'll explore tantalizing topics like simile, rhyme, metaphor, personification, imagery, alliteration, onomotopoeia and concrete poetry, just to name a few. Students will try their hand at these and other poetic tricks and tools, learn about different types of poetry and become familiar with some famous poets, from Mother Goose and Shakespeare to Robert Frost and Langston Hughes. We'll listen to some poems, do some group activities, and enjoy this expressive language! You don't have to be a fantastic speller or accomplished writer to enjoy this class. You just have to be willing to give it a try! (Of course, if you are a fantastic speller or accomplished writer, you're welcome too!)

This class will not have a major homework component.  There may be brief assignments from time to time, but most of the course content will be covered during class. Students who wish to complete extra projects at home will be provided that opportunity and encouraged to do so, but this will not be required.

Students should bring to each class:  a 3-ring folder or binder to hold and organize handouts, a pencil or pen and paper.

Public Speaking

Whether you love the idea of public speaking or cringe at the thought, this class is for you! We'll use theater games, improv activities, team building experiences and numerous speaking opportunities to develop and refine public speaking skills in a supportive and fun environment.  Eye contact, rate, pitch, volume, engaging the audience, using visuals, props and humor, diction and non-verbal communication are some of the points which will be addressed in class.

This is not a speech writing class, but we will begin to use basic outlines and talking point lists during class. Students will "have the floor" for a few minutes every other week to address the class on an assigned topic. Don't let that scare you off - you can do this - you can have fun doing this! We'll also memorize and practice delivering several poems and portions of famous speeches from history, including Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

This class will build upon skills learned in my Public Speaking class last year. However, that class or any other is not a prerequisite for this class. Homework will involve spending a small amount of time each week reading the material being memorized by the class.

Science is so cool! Combine it with history and you just can't go wrong! Let's take a look at some famous folks from the past and see what in the world they were thinking! Through short biographies, videos, CD's, experiments, activities and occasional worksheets, students will learn about many fascinating scientists throughout history and the contributions made by each. Copernicus, Da Vinci, Alexander Graham Bell, The Curies, Galileo, Einstein, George Washington Carver, Thomas Edison, and Alhazen are just some of the people whose lives, ideas and experiments we'll investigate in this class. Homework is not a major component of this class, although there may be brief assignments from time to time. Students should have a 3-hole binder or folder in which to keep class materials.

Shakespeare

This introductory class will explore the life, times, language and writing of William Shakespeare. Through adapted texts, teacher presentations, readers' theater techniques, discussion, CD's, mini books and short worksheets geared for grades 6-8, students will gain a sound introduction to Shakespeare's England and three of his plays. Students will listen to, read, interact with and remember foundational information from A Midsummer's Night Dream, The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet.

Discussions and activities will involve describing and analyzing characters, summarizing, comparing and contrasting  plots, defining vocabulary and distinguishing between Shakespeare's comedies, tragedies and histories. Shakespearean language can seem dauntinginly complex, but it was common language  when it was written, easily understood  by  "betters" and "commoners" alike.  We can understand it, too! Not only that, but we can enjoy it!

As of right now I would like you to purchase "The 1960's for Dummies" and also "Hippie Dictionary" by John Bassett McCleary.  This second book has some "language" in it - - parents use your own discretion for purchasing it.  There will be a few other books, but I will let you know in advance of school strating.

This self-designed course will be taught using a series of DVD's including:  The History Channel, National Geographic, as well as movies of historical fiction. Students will be expected to define vocabulary words, and answer essay questions, although it will be the parents job to grade these. Students will be taught appropriate skills for group discussions as we share our answers to the questions.  There is no fee.  Parents will be expected to print a particular time line, the questions, and to download supplemental e-books (which are free) onto DVD's or a MP3 players.  That information will follow.  Though these DVD's are secular in nature, parents should know that scripture will be woven into disucussions, and a biblical world view will be taught. (as well as I am able) I will be compiling an approximate number of hours of work for this class, including supplemental books, so that parents can determine credit hours.
